1 Armature/springs too much tension
Rear spring could be bent too much, loosen the back spring screw, flip the back spring/armature bar/front spring assembly around and turn it around so that the front spring is facing downward on the other side of the frame (basically you did a 180 with the assembly).
2 Too much voltage
If you need to run the machine at max voltage or near max, there is something wrong with the way you tuned. You’re going to need to adjust the tensions on the springs or gap of the front spring to the contact screw to lower the amount of voltage necessary to get it to run right.
3 Needles set inappropriately
Keep the needles slide vertically into the tube, grip, touch nothing. With the constant vibration of tattooing, nipples and rubber bands may become loose during use. Adjust the connection to make sure needles set appropriately.

What Types of Tattoo Machines?
Liner
A liner machine is the base needed for a clean tattoo. A liner is used to outline the tattoo and for defining details and line work. The machine uses groups of needles most commonly in a circle pattern to deliver the ink into the skin. These traditional machines have parts such as coils and an armature bar, using electromagnets to run.
Shader
The shader is used to color in the tattoo or to add shading and depth. A shader machine is heavier than a liner, due to the heavier components. Along with larger groupings of flat rows of needles, a shader may have larger coils to give the machine extra power for coloring in a large area.
Rotary
A rotary machine, unlike a liner and shader, does not run on coils. It runs on a
a wheel, somewhat like a pulley system, and is a much quieter machine when running.
A rotary machine can be used as a liner or shader.
Warning
Never purchase a tattoo machine unless you have completed a professional apprenticeship in a tattoo shop and have been educated in the prevention of spreading disease. Tattooing without this kind of education can lead to scarring, staph infections and diseases like hepatitis for you or someone you tattoo.

Why Does My Tattoo Machine Not Work
We understand that not everyone is an expert on tattoo, might have many questions about tattoo machines, especially for beginners. So we list some common problems you may face, and some instruction for you to solve these problems yourself.
1. Contacts
When your tattoo machine quits, the first thing to check is the contacts. Tattoo machines rely on the completion of a circuit to work. These are the points where your machine connects to your power pack. With the constant vibration of tattooing, these contacts can easily become loose or shift during use. Adjust your connection and try again. If the gun still doesn't work, clean the contacts with paper or use a fine grit sandpaper to renew the surface. Ensure that all grit and debris are clear before trying to use your machine again.
2 Armature
Check to see if the armature bar is jammed. If it's touching the front coil and it can not move up and down, it's not in its proper position. Unscrew the contact screw until it provides enough distance, permitting the coil to move up and down.
3 clip cord or foot pedal
Clip cords and foot pedals will wear down over time, especially if you yank on the wire here and there. You can troubleshoot them if you have another clip cord or foot pedal to test with. Sanding down the connecting prongs of the clip cord may help as oxidization can build up at those points causing a progressively poor connection.
Unscrew the cover---break or not?
4 Power Pack
To find out if there's a problem with your power pack when the tattoo machine quits, hook up a different machine for testing. If a different machine doesn't work, then your power pack is the problem. If your power pack has gone bad, it is likely time to purchase a new one.
5 voltage
Turn the voltage knob on the machine all the way down. Slowly turn it up while holding the gun in your hand by the tube until you hear a smooth vibration sound to ensure you have the proper voltage.

how to tune or set up of a tattoo machine for lining or shading?
About the tattoo machine debugging and methods, I always want to own understanding of the machine and the experience to share with you, but always felt that he is still in groping. After nearly period of time have a good heart of the deep understanding of the machine, and write down to discuss with you, but this is just my feeling now, I writing just want to give you for reference and reference. I hope my these words can help you.
A tattoo machine to get the hand, can let us to adjust only the following links: Front spring, rear spring, distance between spring, contact screw, damping ring, the position of the coil, a rubber band, armature. And coil, iron core, frame, capacitance basically we can't move. All adjustments around two factors - frequency and power, I will be one of the below rule one join us.
Front spring : length width thickness soft hard and bending Angle will affect the frequency and power of the machine. Long, narrow, thin, soft, low bend Angle will slow down, let the machine frequency power. Conversely frequency faster, smaller power.
Damping ring: thick hard and soft, thin, soft to slow frequency, power. And vice versa. Damping ring is actually an extension of the former shrapnel, good shrapnel can even don't damping ring before, as before the power to the maximum value of shrapnel, the biggest strength.
Contact screw: the location of the contact point is near the tip of the former shrapnel, the slower the frequency, the greater the power, and vice versa. Contact the more tightly on the screw strength is smaller, the faster the frequency. Advice contact screw, as far as possible light touch shrapnel, at most backspin again one to two laps, shrapnel can play the biggest power.
rear spring: size and bending Angle will affect the hard and soft machine frequency, power, and the length of the needle. Narrow, thin, soft will slow down, let the machine frequency power. Conversely frequency faster, smaller power. Bending Angle of the needle, the longer the greater the power machine, the greater the frequency of the slower, and vice versa.
After spacing: refers to the machine in the back seat and the distance of the armature, this distance is to change the length of the shrapnel, actually can be done in several ways, adjust the length of the armature, the size of the shell plate, after promptly moved forward, and it can change after spacing. After a distance, the greater the power, the greater the frequency, the more slowly, and vice versa.
Coil position: the front circle the top (near the needle that coil) the greater the power, the greater the distance between the coil before and after the greater the power. Suggested coil after front circle as far as possible, don't move.
armature bar: material, weight, length of armature the heavier the longer the armature, the greater the power, the slower frequency. Material aspects, temporarily I only know that the better magnetic armature, the better.
Rubber band: use less as far as possible, as long as can control needle of beating, the right way can reduce the loading needle, so you just need one or two root rubber bands. Under the condition of general color, totem need machine strength, frequency, black and white traditional and drawing need machine power is small, fast frequency. You suitable machine can be adjusted according to the above rules. Above for shallow analysis, laughed.
If you ask, what kind of frequency and power to adjust to the best? Ha ha, each person is different, see his like, all roads lead to Rome.

How to Set up Your Tattoo Machine
Set up tattoo machine is an important procedure for users to tattoo, and there is some instructions for you to set up your tattoo machine:
1 First you should assemble machine and the first step is to set barrel, please look at the tattoo grip a tube inside it ,on the two sides of the grip there are two screw, the screws is to fix the tube and tattoo tip, you could slap the tube at preferable length inside the grip and fix it by adjust tool like this.
Then fix the tips also at your favorable lenghth, fix it just as the tube.

2 The second step is set up needles ,now you can see from the back of its package, it says RL RS M1 M2 RM or F, this tell the size of needles
We take one out, and begin to assemble it . two tips when set up needle,
One is please make sure the projection downward.
Second you should not bump the top of needle to any place of the tips and grip so not to dull the needle and lead to painful tattoo.
3 Put a nipple on the armature bar pin. That is where the top of your needle will be connected around. Slap the needles and attach it to the nipple.
4 Hang needles on the gromments.
After grip is assmebled ok ,we need to adjust the length of needles it comes out. What we can see for this needles is around 1mm to 1.5 mm.When grip and needles are adjust well ,we can screw up the grip.
5 This is the whole step of how to assmeble tattoo machine.
6 Connect the foot pedal, clip cord and power pack to the gun.
